Brownfield Hospital Transformation | Phased Expansion | Integrated Healthcare Campus

 

Jayaben Mody Hospital, Ankleshwar, was originally developed in 1996. By the time AMRD Corporation became involved in 2019, the hospital had been serving the region for more than two decades and was operating with infrastructure designed for an earlier generation of healthcare.

Our involvement began with the introduction of super-speciality oncology care. But as we studied the existing hospital, its infrastructure and the surrounding campus, it became clear that the opportunity was much larger.

What began as an oncology expansion gradually evolved into the transformation of the existing hospital and the development of an integrated healthcare campus.

Strengthening What Already Existed

Instead of replacing the old hospital, the approach was to work with the existing structure — upgrading it progressively while the hospital continued to function.

Clinical departments were reorganised, infrastructure was modernised and available spaces were carefully reused to increase capacity and improve patient care.

Over the course of the redevelopment, the existing hospital is being expanded from approximately 117 beds to 183 beds.

Major interventions include:

  • 12-bed Emergency Department with burns and trauma care
  • 8-bed Dialysis facility
  • Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Labour Room and Obstetric OT
  • 3-OT surgical complex
  • 14-bed ICU, NICU and upgraded inpatient areas
  • Expanded CSSD, Pathology and Radiology, including X-ray, CT and MRI
  • Renovated OPD, billing and patient-support areas

The challenge was not simply to introduce new departments, but to integrate contemporary healthcare planning, medical technology and engineering systems into an ageing building without interrupting ongoing hospital operations.

From Hospital Expansion to Campus Development

As the existing hospital evolved, the surrounding campus needed to evolve with it.

Their relationship with the existing hospital, emergency services, diagnostics, staff circulation, parking, utilities and future expansion had to be considered together.

The campus therefore developed progressively around a larger healthcare vision.

Supporting facilities such as the canteen, pharmacy, Eye Bank, Skin Bank and administration areas have also been integrated into the growing healthcare ecosystem.

A Campus Designed to Keep Evolving

The project was never conceived as a fixed masterplan completed at one point in time.

From 2019 to 2027, every phase has responded to an immediate healthcare requirement while also preparing the campus for what may be required next.

At the same time, the new Super-Speciality Hospital is being planned with the ability for future vertical expansion, allowing additional clinical capacity to be introduced as healthcare demand grows.

At the same time, roads, parking, emergency access, staff movement, engineering services, medical gases, power, water and other infrastructure are being progressively strengthened to support the entire campus rather than individual buildings.

Building Around a Live Hospital

One of the most important aspects of the project has been executing extensive redevelopment while the existing hospital remained operational.

Architecture, structure, MEP services, medical planning, equipment and hospital operations had to be continuously coordinated so that construction could proceed without compromising patient care, emergency access or day-to-day hospital functioning.

This phased approach allowed the hospital to continue serving the community while being systematically transformed around it.

The new Super-Speciality Hospital, Advanced Oncology facilities, BMT Centre, Doctors’ Quarters, staff accommodation, dormitory and supporting healthcare infrastructure are being planned as an integrated part of the evolving campus.

Towards a Greener Healthcare Campus

The expansion has also created an opportunity to improve the campus beyond its clinical infrastructure.

The development incorporates Miyawaki plantation, additional green areas, recharge borewells, solar infrastructure and solar lighting, together with improved parking and safer vehicular movement.

New buildings are also being planned with greater use of natural daylight, passive environmental strategies and reduced heat gain.
