520-Bed Teaching Hospital Upgradation | Brownfield Redevelopment | Medical College Integration | Oncology & Nuclear Medicine Expansion

KD Parvadiya Hospital was studied as a proposed brownfield healthcare redevelopment project aimed at upgrading the existing hospital to meet the bed-strength and functional requirements associated with the development of a Medical College. The planning approach focused on maximising the potential of the existing hospital through targeted internal modifications, adaptive reuse of available spaces and vertical expansion, rather than planning an entirely new hospital facility.

To achieve the required capacity, the proposal explored conversion of portions of the Lower Ground Floor parking area into inpatient wards, along with reorganisation of underutilized selected spaces on other floors to accommodate additional ward facilities. Existing departments and support areas were reviewed to identify opportunities for integrating new beds while retaining essential hospital functions. An additional floor was also proposed, enabling the existing hospital to achieve a planned capacity of approximately 605 beds.

A second major component of the proposal is the addition of a dedicated Oncology and Nuclear Medicine building in the second phase of construction on the opposite end of the site. Conceived as a specialised 100-bedded hospital wing, the new block was planned to accommodate high-technology oncology services within a purpose-designed environment while remaining functionally connected to the larger hospital campus.

The Ground Floor was planned for the Radiation Oncology Department, including a dedicated radiation therapy bunker, Brachytherapy facilities, three Oncologist OPDs, reception and patient waiting areas.

The First Floor was planned for the Nuclear Medicine Department, supported by its own OPDs, reception, waiting and associated specialised clinical spaces. The four upper floors were planned as inpatient wards, providing the additional bed capacity required within the proposed expansion.

AMRD’s proposal combined adaptive reuse of the existing hospital with purpose-built specialised expansion, demonstrating a planning strategy for increasing bed capacity, meeting evolving teaching-hospital requirements and introducing advanced services such as Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine within an established healthcare campus.
