Phased Hospital Redevelopment | Transitional Healthcare Facility | Brownfield Planning
The UNM Hospital C-Block project is an ongoing critical enabling phase for the redevelopment of the existing hospital. The upgraded C-Block facility comprises a total built-up area of 10,710 sqm and functions as a 285-bedded interim hospital, ensuring continuity of healthcare services during the redevelopment process. Since the existing hospital building has to be demolished and replaced with an upgraded new facility, uninterrupted healthcare operations first required the existing hospital departments and patient capacity to be relocated within C-Block of the campus. AMRD therefore planned the expansion and reorganisation of C-Block to accommodate the functioning hospital during construction of the new development.
The primary objective is to maintain continuity of hospital services throughout the redevelopment process. C-Block has been expanded to accommodate the required capacity of the existing hospital, with the intervention strategically divided between permanent additions that can continue serving the campus in the future and temporary construction required specifically for the transition period.
AMRD’s study and planning approach focuses on identifying which departments must remain operational, their clinical relationships, patient and staff movement, existing infrastructure limitations and the additional area required to accommodate the relocated hospital. The challenge is not simply to create temporary accommodation, but to establish a fully functioning interim hospital with emergency, maternity, surgical, critical-care, laboratory, dialysis and inpatient services while the main hospital redevelopment proceeds.
The ground floor accommodates the high-footfall and easily accessible functions, including Emergency, pharmacy, District Counselling Centre OPDs, sample collection, additional OPDs, reception and waiting areas.
The first floor is primarily dedicated to maternal and neonatal healthcare, comprising labour rooms, pre- and post-operative areas, female wards, SNCU, vaccine room, KMC area, MNCU and ANC ward. Grouping these functions on one level creates a coordinated maternity and neonatal-care zone.
The second floor forms the principal surgical and critical-care level, with an OT complex comprising one septic OT, one major OT and two minor OTs, supported by CSSD, pre- and post-operative recovery, general ICU, surgical wards and staff dining facilities.
The third floor accommodates major diagnostic and support services including Pathology Laboratory, RT-PCR, Microbiology/Bacteriology Laboratory, Blood Bank and administration, together with the dialysis ward and general wards.
The fourth floor is predominantly dedicated to inpatient care, including general wards, surgical wards, paediatric ward and NRC ward.
