Educational Campus Extension | Experiential Learning Environment | Courtyard-Based School Planning
Completed in 2012, Bionics School, Surat is a G+2 educational campus with approximately 6,150 sq.m. of built-up area, developed for Mr. Janakbhai. The school was conceived around an educational philosophy that encourages students to learn through self-experience, creativity, thoughtfulness, reasoning, analysis and skill-based education, while building a culture of co-operation, unity and shared responsibility.
The vision for Bionics School went beyond creating conventional classrooms. The objective was to develop an environment where students could acquire meaningful education through experience and interaction. The school promotes independent thinking and creativity, while encouraging students to learn collectively, take responsibility and participate actively in school life.
AMRD translated this educational philosophy into a spatial concept centred around interaction, openness and natural environmental comfort. Instead of planning the school as a long institutional corridor with classrooms arranged on either side, the building was organized as a series of interconnected academic blocks around a central open courtyard.
The courtyard forms the social and spatial heart of the school, while surrounding passages connect the different classroom blocks and create continuous visual relationships between learning spaces, circulation areas and the outdoors.
The G+2 school building is organized into five principal blocks positioned around the central courtyard. Classroom planning follows a modular approach, with two-classroom units vertically stacked to form individual academic blocks.
The arrangement was carefully developed to allow classrooms to receive better natural daylight and cross-ventilation, reducing dependence on artificial lighting during school hours and creating a more comfortable learning environment.
At one end of the courtyard, a dedicated block accommodates the laboratory and practical learning areas, reinforcing the school's emphasis on experiential and skill-based education. The block located at the opposite end incorporates the administrative facilities at ground-floor level, allowing the school management to remain strategically positioned within the academic environment while maintaining effective supervision and accessibility.
The centrally open courtyard is one of the defining architectural elements of the project. All major academic blocks are connected through passages overlooking this shared open space.
