Brownfield Community Health Centre Extension | Maternal Healthcare | Day-Care & Ambulatory Services

Located in Kosad, Surat, the Kosad Community Health Center is a brownfield expansion of the existing government health centre, developed for the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). Completed in 2021, the project provides a 35-bed day-care and ambulatory healthcare facility with a total built-up area of approximately 2,340 sq.m.

The project was conceived in direct response to a community survey conducted across the Kosad housing area, covering different pockets and clusters from H1 to H5. The AMRD study focused on understanding the healthcare and social infrastructure available to the local population. The survey identified a significant gap in nearby maternity and inpatient healthcare services, leading SMC to expand the existing Kosad Health Center—the principal government healthcare facility serving the area.

The planning strategy involved retaining and upgrading the existing Kosad Health Center and VBDC building while introducing a new connecting block. This brownfield approach allowed the existing structures to remain operational and function as part of a more integrated healthcare complex. Additional facilities were developed on the first floor based on the requirements identified through the local survey.

The existing 610 sq.m. ground-floor health centre continues to accommodate the case and office room, waiting lounge, dressing and injection room, Medical Officer, family planning and immunisation services, laboratory, dispensary, stores and associated patient amenities.

The new ground-floor extension, with a built-up area of 1,730 sq.m., introduces an entrance foyer and waiting area, nurse station, two doctors’ consulting rooms, X-ray with console room, pathology laboratory, sample collection, clean and dirty utility areas, stores, accessible toilet and a meeting/camp area, strengthening both routine healthcare and community outreach functions.

The new first floor forms the principal inpatient and maternity zone, with a built-up area designed to accommodate expanded healthcare functions. It includes a 15-bed female ward and 15-bed male ward, nursing stations, recovery room, patient holding area, operation theatre, labour room, primary washing, packing and autoclave areas, stores, waiting lounge, doctors’ rest room, nurse duty room, equipment store and administration. The project also incorporates supporting engineering infrastructure, including a dedicated electrical room.

Architecturally, the intervention is based on adaptive brownfield expansion rather than replacement. By linking the existing healthcare and VBDC blocks through a new extension, the project improves departmental connectivity, retains usable infrastructure and introduces the additional facilities identified as necessary by the community.

The completed project demonstrates a survey-led, community-responsive and brownfield approach to public healthcare planning, transforming the existing centre into a more comprehensive facility with maternity, inpatient, diagnostic and surgical services while continuing to support primary and preventive healthcare for the Kosad community.
