Oncology Super-Speciality Hospital| Radiation Therapy | Specialised Healthcare Architecture
The J. B. Mody Cancer Centre, Ankleshwar marked the beginning of AMRD Corporation’s association with JayabenMody Hospital in 2019. The project was conceived as a specialised cancer-care facility bringing radiation oncology, medical oncology, chemotherapy and advanced diagnostics into one coordinated environment. The design focuses on patient-centric infrastructure, with carefully planned clinical spaces, generous natural light and visual connections to the outdoors to create a more supportive and healing environment for cancer patients.
The key challenge was integrating a technically complex oncology facility within an active hospital campus while maintaining clear patient access and strict segregation of radiation-controlled areas. Medical equipment, shielding, engineering services and clinical workflows were coordinated from the outset to ensure safe and efficient movement.
The radiation therapy zone integrates a LINAC bunker, brachytherapy and PET-CT, supported by essential technical spaces including the hot lab, treatment planning and control areas. Oncology OPDs support consultation and follow-up care, while the expansion provides a planned 37-bed chemotherapy facility in two dedicated wards and 7 special IPD rooms, providing dedicated inpatient accommodation for oncology patients requiring closer observation, treatment support and short-stay admission.
The facility was planned as an integrated cancer-care ecosystem rather than a collection of isolated departments. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, consultation, imaging and support functions are closely connected while maintaining the required clinical segregation. The wider planning also integrates the Cancer Centre with the existing hospital, diagnostics, emergency and dialysis facilities, staff areasand parking, allowing the specialised centre to operate efficiently as part of the larger healthcare campus.
The entire Cancer Centre, including specialised treatment areas, was planned in accordance with applicable AERB, NBC, GDCR, relevant IS Codes, FGI and IHFG healthcare planning guidelines, covering radiation safety, fire and life safety, accessibility, ventilation, engineering services and clinical planning requirements.
Architecturally, the Cancer Centre has a distinct identity while remaining connected with the existing hospital campus. A dedicated entrance canopy, waiting areas, parking and landscaped elements create a clear and welcoming arrival. Patient-facing spaces such as waiting, consultation and chemotherapy areas were planned to benefit from natural daylight and visual connection with the surroundings wherever possible. Radiation-controlled spaces rely on specialised mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning due to equipment, shielding and safety requirements.
As part of its future expansion strategy, the Advanced Oncology Centre is also planned to incorporate a dedicated Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) facility and additional oncology inpatient beds. This expansion will strengthen the continuum of cancer care by providing greater capacity for haemato-oncology, specialised inpatient treatment and long-term oncology requirements, while allowing the centre to grow in response to future patient demand and evolving cancer-care technology.
What began as a specialised radiation therapy centre progressively developed into a broader Advanced Oncology Centre. The project demonstrates AMRD’s expertise in cancer hospital architecture, oncology centre planning, LINAC bunker design, PET-CT planning, chemotherapy planning, radiation-safety coordination and patient-centred healthcare design. It also established the foundation for AMRD’s continuing involvement in the development and transformation of the JayabenMody Hospital campus.
