Kiran Hospital was conceived with an ambitious purpose: to create a healthcare institution in Surat capable of providing advanced and complex treatment at a level that would reduce the need for patients to travel to Mumbai or other major healthcare centres.
What began as a vision for an approximately 400-bed hospital evolved through research, clinical consultation, benchmarking and long-term planning into a vertically integrated healthcare campus designed to support advanced medicine, education, research and future expansion.
The client’s vision extended beyond creating another multi-speciality hospital.
Surat was growing rapidly, yet many patients requiring advanced diagnostics, complex surgery, oncology, critical care and other tertiary or quaternary services were travelling outside the city for treatment.
Kiran Hospital was therefore envisioned as an institution capable of bringing a broad spectrum of advanced healthcare services together within Surat.
The original brief was for a hospital of approximately 400 beds, but expansion was considered from the very beginning. The hospital needed to respond not only to immediate requirements, but also to changing medical technologies, increasing patient volumes and new models of healthcare delivery.
The wider vision also incorporated medical and nursing education, research, residential accommodation and institutional support facilities, establishing the basis for a scalable healthcare campus rather than a fixed hospital building.
The planning process did not begin with a predetermined architectural form. It began with understanding healthcare delivery.
AMRD undertook an extensive research process involving discussions with doctors and healthcare professionals across multiple specialties, together with benchmarking studies of established tertiary-care hospitals in India.
Clinical consultations focused on how individual departments functioned, the relationship between specialties, patient journeys, workflows, staffing, medical equipment, infrastructure, infection-control requirements and future healthcare needs.
Doctors from various departments such as medicine, surgery, oncology, cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, nephrology, urology, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, critical care, diagnostics and other specialties contributed to the planning process.
In parallel, AMRD studied leading hospitals across India to understand how complex institutions addressed advanced clinical care, oncology, transplantation, critical care, diagnostic technology, operation theatres, circulation, medical equipment and future expansion.
The objective was not to replicate another hospital, but to combine local clinical knowledge with lessons from established healthcare institutions and translate them into a programme suited specifically to Surat.
The planning was informed by FGI principles and NABH requirements, together with applicable Indian building, healthcare, fire-safety, engineering and radiation regulations.
The research significantly shaped the final hospital programme.
One major conclusion was the need for a comprehensive cancer-care facility. Surat’s expanding regional catchment indicated a growing requirement for medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, advanced imaging and supporting critical-care services.
The research also reinforced the need for tertiary and future quaternary-care capability, including advanced cardiac, neurological, surgical, critical-care and transplant-related services.
Another important consideration was technology.
The medical equipment that would be required throughout the life of the hospital could not always be identified at the beginning of the project. The building therefore needed to accommodate future technologies without being dependent on one particular machine or manufacturer.
This thinking influenced the planning of radiation bunkers, diagnostic areas, operation theatres, structural provisions, service capacities and equipment access.
The hospital was therefore planned as an integrated clinical system rather than a collection of independent departments.
The scale of the programme presented a significant challenge.
A site of approximately 14,300 sq.m had to accommodate a development of approximately 92,900 sq.m, requiring an intensive vertical planning strategy.
Departments were organised according to clinical relationships, patient volumes, access requirements and levels of control.
High-footfall public functions were separated from controlled treatment, critical-care and inpatient areas, while compatible departments were vertically stacked to improve clinical connectivity.

Clinical adjacencies were developed around the actual sequence of care, connecting departments such as Emergency, Imaging, Operation Theatres, ICUs, inpatient units, laboratories, CSSD, oncology and other specialised services.
Architecture, medical equipment and engineering infrastructure were coordinated from the planning stage so that high-technology departments could respond to structural, utility, maintenance, infection-control and operational requirements as one integrated system.
One of the defining components of Kiran Hospital is its advanced oncology programme.
The Radiation Oncology Department was planned with 3 radiation bunkers, designed initially as flexible facilities capable of accommodating future equipment selection and replacement.

The programme also anticipated advanced critical care, transplant-related facilities and future high-technology operation theatres.
By anticipating these requirements during the original planning process, the hospital could introduce specialised clinical capabilities without fundamentally restructuring the building.
DESIGNED FOR GROWTH
Expansion was embedded into the project from the outset.
The initial vision of approximately 400 beds developed into a 500-bed first major phase, while the wider planning framework established the potential for substantially greater capacity.

The wider planning framework retains the potential for further expansion through planned conversion and development of future areas.
Growth was considered not only in terms of bed numbers, but also through structure, vertical circulation, engineering capacity, medical gases, electrical infrastructure, HVAC systems, diagnostics, support services and future departmental conversion.
The objective was to create an institution capable of evolving without losing its operational coherence.
Despite its clinical and technical complexity, the hospital was not intended to feel excessively corporate or institutional.
A large central atrium introduces openness and visual orientation into the building.
Filtered natural daylight, landscaped terraces and naturally illuminated circulation spaces create a more welcoming environment and help patients and visitors navigate a large healthcare facility more intuitively.
The architectural response therefore balances advanced healthcare infrastructure with a more humane patient, visitor and staff experience.
Today, Kiran Hospital operates as a major regional healthcare institution integrating advanced clinical care, critical care, diagnostics, oncology, education, research and institutional support within one campus.
