Medical Education Campus | Nursing College | Student Housing | Research & Skill Development | Integrated Academic Campus
Kiran Medical College, Surat was conceived as a comprehensive medical education campus designed to bring together medical education, nursing education, research, student accommodation, recreation and supporting infrastructure within one integrated institutional environment. Developed across approximately 55,400 sq.m. of land, the campus has a total built-up area of nearly 55,750 sq.m., comprising the Medical College, Nursing College, Boys’ Hostel, Girls’ Hostel, Recreation Centre and supporting utility buildings. The Medical College achieved completion and NMC approval within a record period of just 13 months from the commencement of construction.
The Medical College is planned for an annual intake of 150 students with a built-up area of approximately 32,050 sq.m. The Medical College accommodates the major Pre-Clinical and Para-Clinical Departments, including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and Community Medicine, supported by dedicated practical and research laboratories, departmental museums, teaching rooms and faculty facilities.
The academic block follows a carefully developed 4 wing planning strategy connected to the central Atrium. Wing 1 forms the principal entrance with a central atrium at Upper Ground Floor level, flanked by the Students’ Activity Room and Students’ Council, while the upper floors accommodate departmental administrative areas aligned with their respective laboratories and museums. Wing 2 accommodates the main Administration at Upper Ground Floor level, with lecture theatres on the upper floors. Wing 3 houses the cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating at Upper Ground Floor level, while the upper floors accommodate departmental laboratories and museums. Wing 4 integrates the Library across the Upper Ground and 1st Floors, teaching rooms on the 2nd and 4th Floors, Skill Laboratory on the 3rd Floor, and departmental laboratories and museums on the 5th Floor.
The entrance sequence was designed to create a strong institutional identity. A massive entrance foyer at the Upper Ground Floor, framed by a double-height canopy, creates a grand and welcoming arrival, while the central atrium enhances the sense of volume and brings natural daylight deep into the building throughout the day. The four wings are also externally connected around courtyard spaces, which help draw natural light and ventilation into the academic blocks while creating visual relief and stronger connections between the different parts of the building.
The floor-wise academic zoning was planned to group departments with their associated laboratories, museums, faculty and teaching spaces. The 1st Floor accommodates Anatomy, the 2nd Floor houses Biochemistry and Physiology, the 3rd Floor is dedicated to Pathology, the 4th Floor accommodates Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine, while the 5th Floor houses Microbiology and Community Medicine. This arrangement creates clear academic clustering and efficient movement between teaching, practical and departmental functions.
The teaching infrastructure includes four lecture theatres with 240 students each, a 900 sq.m. Skill Laboratory, multiple teaching rooms and a 1,500 sq.m. library with reading capacity for approximately 450 students. These facilities support formal teaching, practical training, simulation-based learning and independent study within the academic campus.
Student life was considered an integral part of the campus planning. A dedicated Recreation Centre accommodates a 350-seat dining facility, multipurpose hall and gymnasium, while outdoor facilities include a 12,000 sq.m. cricket and sports ground, a common plaza and landscaped gathering spaces. Smaller green pockets are distributed around the buildings, complemented by a kitchen garden near the hostels. Landscape and site development cover approximately 46,500 sq.m., with more than 1,550 trees across 30 varieties and approximately 47,000 plants and shrubs across 45 varieties, creating a greener and more comfortable academic environment.
The overall campus planning establishes clear separation between academic, residential, recreational and service functions, with two controlled access points - one principal entrance and a separate service entry. A dedicated bus stop near the main entrance supports daily student movement, while access-controlled buildings, campus-wide CCTV surveillance and secured peripheral boundaries strengthen campus safety.
Sustainability and infrastructure were integrated into the planning through RO water supply across all buildings and a zero-discharge campus strategy, supported by STP and ETP, along with dedicated electrical and service infrastructure.
The construction of Kiran Medical College commenced in June 2022. The project received its National Medical Commission inspection on 26 June 2023, secured approval on 10 July 2023, and the Medical College commenced operations on 1 September 2023. Today, Kiran Medical College functions as an integrated academic and residential campus supporting medical education, nursing education, clinical learning, research and student development within a single cohesive environment.
